The 4 Stages of Team Building
Achieving a world-class team doesn't hinge on talent alone—it's about mastering the four fundamental stages of team development.
In 1965, Bruce Tuckman introduced his theory of group development, a framework championed by two-time Major League Soccer Championship coach, Caleb Porter, for building championship teams. Caleb first shared this with me four years ago and I can't stop thinking about when it comes to leading teams.
Coach Porter is in his first year with the New England Revolution team and is living this process as we speak.
Tuckman's theory identifies four key stages:
- Forming: This initial stage involves orientation and testing as team members gather and begin to understand their roles and goals.
- Storming: Conflict and challenges emerge as team members assert themselves and differences in opinions surface.
- Norming: Cohesion is established, and rules and norms are defined, facilitating smoother collaboration and clearer objectives.
- Performing: The pinnacle stage where the team achieves high efficiency and works seamlessly towards its goals with strong morale and effective communication.
Porter's application of Tuckman's theory underscores its simplicity yet critical importance in understanding how teams evolve and succeed.
By navigating these stages effectively, teams can harness their collective potential and achieve championship-level performance.
Every team must go through the Storming stage to get to the next level. Lots of people miss this.

I love this visual from Janis Ozolins.
We're halfway through the year and can look at the rest of the year as an opportunity to use the lessons from the first half.
He's a great follow on X if you're on there.
Until next week...thanks for reading!
