Lessons that last a lifetime
Today marks what would have been my father’s 83rd birthday. It’s been seven years since we lost him to Lewy Body dementia, yet his presence feels as real and influential as ever, especially as I forge my path in entrepreneurship.
My dad, a college wrestling coach, professor, and small business owner, left behind a legacy rich with wisdom, resilience, and humor. He taught me lessons that transcend time and circumstance, and I find myself reflecting on these, particularly as I navigate the complex waters of starting and growing my own business.
Here are some of the enduring lessons from my father that I carry with me:
-
Work Ethic: My dad was up before dawn on weekends, heading to our family-owned Italian grocery store in Cleveland to bake bread and prepare pizza. His tireless dedication not only supported our family but also instilled in me the value of hard work and commitment.
-
Support: Whether I was playing soccer or facing life’s challenges, he was there—always in the corner of the field, always cheering, sometimes a bit too loudly. His presence taught me the importance of being there for others, the impact of showing up can have on those we love.
-
Encouragement: Calling me a "money player," he instilled a confidence in me that has been crucial in my professional life, teaching me to trust in my abilities and rise to the occasion.
-
Resilience: I learned from his struggles and triumphs that life will indeed punch you in the face, but there’s always a reason to keep fighting. His battles with mental health and his unabashed openness about them have given me the courage to speak up about my own struggles and to support others in theirs.
-
Family First: He showed boundless love and care for his mother, visiting her, taking her to work, and caring for her in her later years. This taught me the invaluable lesson of cherishing family, reminding me to prioritize these precious relationships.
-
Joy in Life: Despite his challenges, he never missed a chance to enjoy life, whether joking with friends or organizing community gatherings. He taught me to find laughter and lightness even in the darkest times.
-
Emotional Honesty: Though I seldom saw him cry, those moments of vulnerability were profound. They taught me the strength in showing emotions and the deep connections they forge.
-
Community: As the glue in his circle of friends and beyond, he demonstrated the power of bringing people together, creating lasting bonds that support and enrich lives.
As I remember my dad today, I am reminded of all the good—a man who, despite imperfections, left a mark of goodness and strength. I hope sharing these lessons adds something meaningful to your day as they have to mine.
