Essay: The battles we don't see
This week, a friend shared something with me that stopped me in my tracks.
He told me that just a few weeks ago, he was seriously considering taking his own life. It was shocking to hear. This is someone who’s gregarious, upbeat, and full of life—at least on the outside.
Someone you’d never guess was carrying that kind of pain.
Thankfully, he’s on the road to recovery and getting the help he needs. But his story is a powerful reminder of how fragile life is—and how often we don’t see the battles people are quietly fighting. It’s easy to look at someone and think they’ve got it all together.
To assume their life is as polished as it seems on the surface.
But the truth?
We never really know what someone’s going through. And that’s why connection matters. So, as I reflect on this experience, I want to pause and express my gratitude—to you.
Thank you for reading this, for being part of this community, and for allowing me to share these reflections.
It’s a privilege I don’t take lightly. You matter. Your presence matters.
Your willingness to engage, to reflect, and to grow makes a difference—not just in your own life, but in the lives of those around you.
If you’re in a tough place right now, please know this: you’re not alone. There’s no shame in asking for help or admitting you’re struggling. Reaching out is a brave and necessary step.
And if you’re in a good place, consider this your nudge to reach out to someone in your world.
Send the text. Make the call. Show up for them. Because sometimes, a small gesture of care is enough to remind someone they’re not invisible—and that they’re not alone.
We never know what someone is carrying. But with a little intention, we can remind them they don’t have to carry it alone.
Thank you for being here, for reading this, and for continuing to make space for these reflections.
With gratitude and intention,
Jon
